Amy is not the fastest girl in her class. In fact, she usually finishes last in running races. But this year, she decided to join the 800-meter race on Sports Day.

For two months, she practiced every morning. She ran around the school track before class, rain or shine. Her best friend, May, sometimes ran with her. Her legs hurt, and some days she wanted to give up, but she never did.

On Sports Day, the whistle blew, and the race began. Amy stayed in her lane and ran at her own speed. Her classmates watched from the side, and they shouted her name. In the last hundred meters, she ran faster and faster.

Amy did not win the race. She finished fourth. Fourth place was her best record ever. But when she crossed the finish line, her classmates cheered loudly. Amy smiled. She was not last this time, and she knew she could be even better next year.
