On a quiet summer night, a mother sea turtle swims to the beach. She climbs onto the sand and digs a deep hole with her back feet. Then she lays about one hundred eggs in the hole and covers them with sand before she returns to the sea.
About two months later, the eggs hatch. Tiny baby turtles break out of their shells and run to the sea as fast as they can. Many birds and crabs try to catch them, so the babies must be quick. In the end, only a few of them can grow up.
Sea turtles can live for a long time and swim thousands of kilometers in the ocean. A mother turtle may travel across whole oceans and still find her way back to the same beach where she was born. In Taiwan, you can see green sea turtles around Liuqiu Island and Orchid Island, where local people and scientists work together to protect the beaches.
Sadly, many sea turtles are now endangered. Plastic bags in the sea look like jellyfish, their favorite food. When turtles eat the bags by mistake, they get sick and may die. To help sea turtles, we can use less plastic and keep the beaches clean. Every small action can give these gentle travelers a safer home.
