When Uncle Ben comes home from work, his house says, "Welcome home!" The lights turn on by themselves, and the air conditioner starts to work. Even the door can recognize his face and open for him. Uncle Ben lives in a smart home.
Sensors around the house can feel light, heat, and movement. If Uncle Ben forgets to turn off the stove, the house sends a message to his phone. If a window opens at night, the house automatically rings an alarm. The front doorbell has a camera, too. When a visitor rings, Uncle Ben can see who it is on his phone, even when he is not home.
The house also helps Uncle Ben save energy. It turns off the lights in empty rooms and closes the curtains on hot afternoons to keep the house cool. Last month, his electricity bill was much lower than before.
His neighbors ask him if he feels safe living with so many machines. He laughs and says the house is like a careful friend: it watches and reminds, but it never decides for him. And Uncle Ben still makes his own tea. "Some things are better when I do them slowly, with my own hands," he says.
