These days, many students use artificial intelligence, or AI, tools to help with their homework. With a few taps on a phone, an AI can answer a math problem, write an English sentence, or even finish a whole report. It is fast and easy, so more and more students depend on it.
Some people think AI is a great helper. They say students can use it to check answers and learn from its explanations. They also point out that AI is patient. It never gets tired or angry, and students can ask the same question again and again. "It's like having a teacher at home, twenty-four hours a day," says one mother. A student in Taichung agrees. When she does not understand her science textbook, she asks AI to explain the ideas in a simpler way, and then she reads the book again.
However, other people worry. If students let AI do all the thinking, they may never learn to think for themselves. Copying AI's answers is also a kind of cheating, because the work is not really theirs. Teachers say they can often tell when a report was written by a machine: it sounds perfect, but it has no feeling and no personal ideas. Worse, students who copy all the time may feel lost during tests, when no AI is there to help.
Some schools now make rules about AI. Students must tell the teacher when they use AI and how they used it. Perhaps this is the best way: use AI wisely. Ask it for hints, but write the final answers in your own words. After all, homework is not just about getting the right answer. It is training for the brain, and no machine can do that training for you. The rule is simple: AI can help you learn, but it cannot learn for you.
